How to Spot a Fake or Resealed Pokémon Booster Box
Share
Why This Matters
The Pokémon TCG market has grown enormously, and with that growth has come an increase in counterfeit and resealed product. A resealed box is one that has been opened, the best packs removed, and then resealed to look factory fresh. Buying one is one of the most frustrating experiences in the hobby — and it's more common than most people realise.
Here's how to protect yourself.
Check the Shrink Wrap
Factory shrink wrap has a very specific look and feel. Things to check:
- Seam placement — factory seams are typically on the bottom or back of the box, neat and consistent. Reseals often have uneven seams or seams in unusual places
- Tightness — factory wrap is very tight with no looseness or bubbling. Resealed boxes often have slightly looser wrap
- Heat gun marks — look for small ripples, bubbles, or discolouration that can indicate the wrap was applied with a heat gun rather than industrial machinery
- Texture — genuine factory wrap has a consistent texture. Resealed wrap can feel slightly different, sometimes thicker or shinier
Inspect the Cardboard Box
- Flap integrity — check the bottom flaps of the box. Factory-sealed boxes have clean, undisturbed glue on the flaps. If the flaps have been re-glued, you may see residue, uneven adhesion, or slight warping
- Crease marks — look for any crease lines that suggest the box was previously opened and refolded
- Print quality — genuine boxes have sharp, consistent printing. Counterfeits often have slightly off colours, blurry text, or incorrect fonts
Weigh the Box
This is one of the most reliable checks. Factory-sealed booster boxes have a consistent weight. If you have access to a precise scale, weigh the box and compare it to the known weight for that set (widely available in collector communities online). A box that's significantly lighter than expected is a red flag.
Buy From Reputable Sources
The single most effective protection is buying from sellers you trust. Look for:
- Established sellers with verifiable track records and reviews
- Sellers who can provide provenance — where the stock came from
- Clear, high-resolution photos of the actual item being sold, not stock images
- Transparent return policies if the product turns out to be resealed
What to Do If You Suspect a Reseal
If you've received a box you suspect has been resealed, document everything immediately — photograph the box from all angles before opening it further. Contact the seller and, if unresolved, raise a dispute through your payment provider.
